Two Shepherds

Summary

Two Shepherds specializes (primarily) in Rhone varieties from cool climate or old vine vineyards and unique plantings, made with minimal intervention. William Allen has been making wine for about 12 years with his partner Karen Daenan, and up until 2017 they were selling their wine exclusively direct-to-consumer. Their production has grown from fewer than 200 cases when William began commercial production in 2010 to just over 3000 cases last year.

These are real California “terroir” wines from vineyards that are hand-picked, organically-farmed (save one, under "Sonoma Sustainable”). William and Karen make wine in their own facility - not a custom crush which is common for producers of their size - thereby providing a true native yeast environment. In the cellar their touch is similarly light-handed. Among their core winemaking philosophies: no additions other than minimal S02, neutral barrel fermentation and aging, whole cluster ferment, and unfined, unfiltered bottling practices. Add to those, the value they place on their partnerships with their growers in the form of long-term, row-specific contracts.
