Summary
Casa Santos Lima is a very old company located in Alenquer in Portugal’s Lisboa DO, some 40 km north of Lisbon. Founded at the turn of the 20th century by Joaquim Santos Lima, one of the most renowned producers and exporters of his day, the estate is now helmed by his granddaughter Maria João and great-grandson José Luis who took over in 1990. Since then the estate has undergone many technological improvements including a new winery, replanting of vineyards, and sustainable vineyard practices.
The property, spanning some 290 hectares is composed of seven gently sloping hills of young vines and older vines that grow in altitude from 100-200m. They are graced with epic sunshine during the day, yet the nights are cool and fresh, as moderated by the nearness of the Atlantic. Soils are clay and limestone.
