Summary

Folias de Baco is owned and operated by Tiago Sampaio, who grew up in the Douro Valley, Portugal. Tiago learned to love farming from his grandfather who farmed family vineyards in the Douro’s Alto Douro in the Cima Corgo sub-zone. After studying  agriculture academically for many years in Portugal, he travelled to Oregon and obtained his PhD in Oenology and Viticulture, before returning home to start Folias de Baco in 2007.

Tiago farms his family vines that are situated on steep slopes of schist and granite at an altitude between 500-700m. He works with 25 indigenous red and white varietals, some planted over 80 years ago. All practices in the vineyards are non-certified organic, and in the cellar Tiago uses a very light hand, with many whole-cluster fermentations in Lagares, and minimal to no use of SO2 in the finished wines.
