Summary

Quinta da Raza is a family business based in the Basto subregion of the Vinho Verde DOC. This area is the most eastern and inland of the broader Vinho Verde region, and it’s influenced by the mountainous Parc Natural do Alvão just to the east and the Tamega River. It’s a rugged and harsh area 200-400 meters in elevation and experiences the most annual rainfall in all of the Vinho Verde DOC’s.

For the past several years it’s been in the hands of Diogo Teixeira Coelho and his wife Mafalda. Diogo is the fifth generation of the Coelho family, who have an umbilical relationship and an ancestral legacy with the Quinta and the Basto Region. In 1987, Diogo began his career as a winemaker and producer. The potential of the place and his passion for agriculture and the world's wines were some of the reasons driving his commitment.

Diogo and Mafalda completely transformed Raza by planting new vineyards and converted to organic practice, and built a new winery. They also brought the native varietals such as Avesso, Azal, and Padiero to the forefront in Vinho Verde wine map by making mono-varietal wines from these grapes. Quinta da Raza is one of the very few independent Vinho Verde producers in a region largely owned and managed by conglomerate cooperatives.
