NOTES
VINEYARD: Johan Vineyards is one of five bonded wineries within the newly established Van Duzer Corridor AVA. The unique growing conditions within this viticultural area yield wine grapes with a compelling expression of Oregon’s sense of place. Calcareous sedimentary soils with non-native erratic granite contrast with iron-rich volcanic soils to the east. In addition to the soil characteristics, this site is affected by persistent coastal winds. Daily, the sun heats the valley floor and causes a “heat-sink” effect. This differential draws maritime air through the coast range and directly across the vineyard. Annually, there's 30-40% greater daily wind speeds compared to vineyards in the north Willamette Valley.
VINIFICATION: Starting with their pied de cuve (vineyard native yeast cultivation), the Pinot Noir component was left whole cluster and the Chardonnay component (25%) was de-stemmed, which resulted in a somewhat semi-carbonic fermentation. Aged for 10 months in three neutral Burgundy barrels (228 liters), this wine only sees only a minuscule amount of sulfur added one time just before bottling.
