Summary
Domaine Augis is a 5th family generation domaine owned and operated solely by Philippe Augis. The vineyards are a total of 18 hectares in the tiny village of Meusnes and is divided by a dirt road into two appellations- Touraine, and Valençay. Valençay is a very new wine AOC established in 2004, with only 200 hectares under vine. It’s an AOC that doubles as a wine and cheese appellation, and is perhaps more famous for it’s cheese, which is made from unpasturaized goat’s milk and coated with wood ash. Valençay whites must have at least 70 percent Sauvignon Blancc, but may include Chardonnay and the endangered Loire variety, Arbois Blanc. Domaine Augis' Valençay cuvee is made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc. The remainder of the wines are labelled AOC Touraine.
14 ha of the Augis vines are in Touraine, where Philippe grows Côt, Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Chardonnay, and in Valencay the main grape grown is Sauvignon Blanc. The soils on the estate are a unique mix of limestone, clay, and flint, which give the wines incredible minerality and depth. All the vineyards are farmed non- certified organic, and Philippe works the vineyards himself with part-time help from a local who is friends with the family.
