Summary

Located fifty miles south of Beaune, the family-owned Domaine Guillot-Broux owns Mâconnais vineyards in Cruzille, Grevilly, Pierreclos and Chardonnay. Most of the vineyards are on east-facing slopes on clay-limestone soils with various geological formations giving rise to different terroirs, resulting in strikingly different wines.

Established in the early 1950s by Pierre and Jeannine Guillot, the husband-and-wife team worked land that had lain fallow and been abandoned for 100 years due to the phylloxera outbreak of the mid-1800s which swept the region. Owing to this unintentional but ultimately benign neglect, the Guillots were able to own and farm sites which had never been treated with industrial chemicals. Continuing the responsible stewardship of their land, Pierre and Jeannine’s son Jean-Gerard took over the family operation in 1978 alongside his wife Jacqueline Broux, thereby creating the domaine we now know as Guillot-Broux. Prior to his ownership role, Jean-Gerard had been making wine in Meursault (a factor which influenced the controlled oak-aging regimen which is the continued practice at the domaine today), and under his diligent care the domaine received official organic certification in 1991 - the first Burgundy domaine to achieve this status.

Today, the 17 hectare estate is run by the third generation brothers Emmanuel and Patrice. Emmanuel is the head winemaker, a position he returned to in 2000 after a distinguished career as a Sommelier in the UK at the Michelin starred L’Ortolan in Reading, Berkshire, and Patrice manages the domaine’s vineyards.

Domaine Guillot-Broux's wines are exported to over 20 countries worldwide and can be found in a large number of gourmet restaurants and wine shops. In recent years, the weather conditions have often led to lower yields than planned, causing an economic burden for the domaine. In order to find a solution to this situation, the domaine set up the négociant house, MAISON GUILLOT-BROUX in 2014.  For the wines under the Maison label, all the partner winegrowers are either certified organic or converting to organic agriculture. To guarantee the quality of Maison-labeled wines, the domaine selects each individual vineyard they harvest. In addition, Guillot-Broux harvests the grapes themselves and vinifies at their domaine, using the very same methods as for their domaine wines, i.e. no added yeast and minimal use of sulfites.
