NOTES
VINEYARD: Located in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, within the Van Duzer Corridor AVA, Johan Vineyards is a 175-acre certified Biodynamic estate vineyard and winery with 87 acres under vine. Johan uses the preparations 500-508 as prescribed by Rudolf Steiner, which are a range of homeopathic applications to promote healthy and holistic growth. In addition, they maintain over 30 acres as a biodiversity preserve, which includes virgin oak savannah and biologically active riparian zones. Johan is a Demeter-certified biodynamic estate.
FARMING: Biodynamic, Restorative Organic
VINIFICATION: In 2012, Johan worked with Stone Barn Distillery to distill 10 barrels of Pinot Noir to make their very own estate-grown brandy (they even Demeter-certified the distillery's facility!). In 2015, the first Macvin vintage was blended: 1/3 brandy, 2/3 freshly pressed (just a few days macerated) pinot noir juice. This process was repeated in 2016 and 2017. Each vintage yielded two barrels, was encouraged to age and evolve (in the presence of oxygen) for 10, 9, & 8 years respectively. In early 2025, Johan crafted their blend and bottled it in March 2025.
