Jazzy Juice

VARIETALS
Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Pinot Gris

NOTES
VINEYARD: 175-acre certified Biodynamic® estate vineyard and winery with 87 acres under vine. Calcareous sedimentary soils with non-native erratic granite contrast with vineyards located to the east with iron-rich volcanic soils. In addition to the soil characteristics, Johan's site is affected by persistent coastal winds. Daily, the sun heats the valley floor and causes a “heat-sink” effect. This differential draws maritime air through the coast range, directly across from the estate. Annually, there is a 30-40% greater daily wind speed compared to the north Willamette Valley.

FARMING: Biodynamic, Restorative Organic

VINIFICATION: The skin-to-juice ratio of the fermentation is flipped by direct pressing the majority of the grapes and floating some clusters and berries in the juice during fermentation to bring a touch of color and tannin to the wine. This philosophy came about during the 2018 harvest from a desire to make a juicy and bright, lighter-bodied red wine. As for the blend, the "reverse saignee" approach was achieved by using Johan's normal Pinot Noir fermenters. They also played with this technique on both a Zweigelt fermenter and a Pinot+Blaufränkisch co-ferment. Finally, they blended in their favorite Pinot Gris+Pinot Noir co-ferment.
