NOTES
VINEYARD: Located in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, within the Van Duzer Corridor AVA, Johan Vineyards is a 175-acre certified Biodynamic estate vineyard and winery with 87 acres under vine. Johan uses the preparations 500-508 as prescribed by Rudolf Steiner, which are a range of homeopathic applications to promote healthy and holistic growth. In addition, they maintain over 30 acres as a biodiversity preserve, which includes virgin oak savannah and biologically active riparian zones. Johan is a Demeter-certified biodynamic estate.
FARMING: Biodynamic, Restorative Organic
VINIFICATION: In 2017, winemaker Morgan Beck was asked to “care for” 200 baby Savagnin vines coming straight from the Foundation of Plant Sciences at UC Davis. She not only cared for them, but grew them up in small pots until the budwood could be harvested and the variety grafted into the vineyard. After two years of careful tending and growth, the variety was grafted into the vineyard in the spring of 2019 and Johan made their first varietal Savagnin wine in 2021.
