Summary
Located in the small rural municipality of Oquendo, in the province of Álava (Txakoli de Álava DOP), about 30 minutes from Bilbao, the 10-hectare estate is divided into 7 micro-plots. Located 250 meters above sea level in a temperate zone, the vineyards are protected by mountains - putting the vineyards at low risk for frost and damaging humidity from fog.
Xabier Abando and Ana Martin are the proprietors of this dynamic bodega with an old family history in winemaking. Xabier’s memories of his father making wine and growing up in the vineyards in the 1950s, carried him past his father’s death when he was only 15 years old, and gave him the motivation to one day create his own bodega. The winery began to take form in 1996 when he acquired property near the town of Okondo in Jandiola province, and began planting his first 2 hectares of vines. Once his vines produced grapes he found suitable, he built his bodega in 2008 for his first vintage. Now Xabier is making beautiful Txakoli from his organically farmed estate that would have made his father proud.
One hundred percent of the estate's grapes are indigenous varieties, mainly Ondarrabi Zuri, some Ondarrabi Zuri Zerratie (Petit Corbu), and a small plot of Izkiriota known as Gros Manseng. With a philosophy based on sustainability, the values of preserving the environment, while at the same time maintaining tradition, production is performed without invasive techniques and with minimal mechanization.
